The heat transfer mechanism during cooling of hot metals is experimentally studied. The maximum initial temperature for all experiments is set constantly at 850 °C. The spray, full jet, flat jet and nozzle field consisted of full jet nozzles have been extensively studied and compared. It is determined from the experimental investigations that parameters such as initial temperature, jet velocity, jet diameter as well as metal type are vital for the cooling process.

Radiant tubes operate at a high thermal and mechanical load. A failure of the radiant tubes reduces the heat input to the furnace and therefore the productivity. In the worst case, furnace downtime is necessary. Besides choosing the appropriate material and a good dimensioning of the burner-radiant tube-system, different influences lower the lifetime of radiant tubes. This article gives an overview of the state of the art and experimental and numerical investigations concerning the influences on radiant tube lifetime.

New possibilities in process control by technological progress in sensor development were made during the last years. The well-tried thermocouples, zircon dioxide probes, hydrogen and oxygen sensors as well as gas analyzers have to be subject of a systematical check to assure a constant process control. In result, we still have to keep on observing the processes for selective influences in case of process deviations. So it is fundamental to know the possibilities and limits of the sensors and probes which are in use. This article deals with the measurement devices at gaseous carburizing and nitriding.

The role of the bath movement in recycling scrap using coreless induction furnaces

One unique and well-known feature of the coreless induction furnace is its pronounced metal bath movement, caused by the electromagnetic forces present. This bath movement, basically depending on the furnace power and operating frequency, is the reason for the good homogeneity of the melt regarding composition and temperature delivered by such furnace type. On the other hand, this feature is widely used for stirring fine sized metallic scrap into the melt. This type of operation can be further optimized and tailored to the specific requirements by employing some new special circuits. Finally, a new technology is presented, allowing to operate a coreless induction furnace at continuously adjustable frequency down to 30 Hz and with adjustable phase shift between two coil sections, thus offering unmatched freedom in selecting heating power and bath movement characteristics independently.
